Dalongdong Bao'an Temple (大龍峒保安宮) [Taipei kong mahal 180404: Along Dalongdong]

A visit to Dalongdong is never boring, especially if it's your first time. I have already covered before the Taipei Confucius Temple in Taiwan Day 407 and I think it's time to feature the Bao'an Temple plus its surrounding places.  Just a trivia, the temple was awarded the UNESCO Cultural Heritage Preservation Award for the timeless beauty of its architecture so it's a great starting point for this Dalongdong trip.

It's a classic 'A Tale of Two Temples' between the Taipei Confucius Temple and the Bao'an Temple.  In the old streets of Taipei, these two religious sites are neighbors.  They are 45 meters away from each other but a whole day is needed to explore both places.  Where to find the Bao'an Temple? Just board the MRT Tamsui line and alight at the Yuanshan Station.  Proceed to Exit 2 and walk for a few meters in Kulun Street until you pass by the Taipei Confucius Temple.  The Bao'an Temple complex is just behind the house of Confucius.

The Main Hall of the Bao'an Temple

The Bao'an Temple is the home of many deities including Shengnong Emperor, General Black Tiger, and many others.  Upon entering the gate, beautifully drawn door gods will welcome you.  I always got amazed at how their eyes look so real!  The premises of the temple includes an East wing, West wing, a Rear Hall, Front Hall and the Main Hall.  Planes can also be seen flying in the sky as the place is near the Songshan Airport.

The split design of the roof of the Bao'an Temple

I looked into the roof of the Main Hall and I noticed that the right half and left hall of the roof have different patterns.  Bao'an Temple had undergone many major renovations since it was built in the 1800s.  There was one renovation where two artists had a competition.  The end result was the left-half and right-half designs of the roof were different.  You wouldn't easily notice the difference unless you zoom in your camera while taking a picture.  Mural paintings can also be found at the back of the  Main Hall and they seemed to tell a story.

Murals can be found at the back of the Main Hall

at Linsheng Garden
There were tour groups during my visit and this made the place crowded.  I don't have a choice but to let my photos have photobombers.  Feeling hungry?  No problem!  The Dalong Night Market is just a few meters away but why not visit the Linsheng Garden first to relax your hungry stomachs.  It's a typical Chinese garden with a pond and beautiful dragons.

A procession made my visit more interesting

A visit to a temple, a Chinese garden, and a night market.   You don't need to spend much to enjoy these places in historic Dalongdong.  There is also the nearby Linji Huguo Temple and why not experience the colorful festivals in this district of Taipei during specific times of the year.  I’m sure you will enjoy them.  All these and more can be found along Dalongdong.
